NEW DELHI: Today is another important day in terms of the contentious issue triple Talaq among Muslims. It was tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad and duly passed after a long and heated debate among the members. Finally, it will go to the Rajya Sabha where it seems not so easy to be passed because of the required strength of the BJP lawmakers is not sufficient there.

Many lawmakers put their views candidly with their own logic and perception. Both parties, which are for and against, have their own opinions. But it is quite clear that this verdict will open a series of protests from the Muslim community which think that it is an undue and belligerent move of the government and an attempt to encroach upon their personal rights.

The honorable Supreme Court of India had also pronounced its path-breaking verdict in a very vivid and lucid way on the same issue some months back.

The issue of Talaq or divorce is one of the most important issues in the lives of people, not only in India, but all over the world. But in other parts of the world, it is not as contentious as it has been made in India.

However, everyone knows that the holy Quran has its clear-cut views about it.

It has been clearly described in it that a person can give Talaq to his wife only in three stages over the complete three months period. And within that time, all conciliatory approach should be adopted at hand either from the groom’s side or bride’s side. But a section of Sunni Muslims are always against it and they look rigid in justifying it in the name of the Islamic tradition. It shows that their tradition holds much more importance than the divine teachings of Allah.

A great number of Muslims think that the law which has been adopted to punish the law breakers is unjustified and will be entirely misused. But it is also a fact that a section of Muslim women has endorsed it wholeheartedly. It shows that one group takes it as a justified step, and another, unjustified.

Now, it will be interesting to see that what emerges in near future. Will this law will help in curbing this menace or it create a new kind of Pandora’s Box of problems?
